IOWA CITY, Iowa — Casey Kreiter, James Morris, and Brett Van Sloten, senior members of the 2013 University of Iowa football team, have been named to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society.
Now in its eighth year, the Hampshire Society recognizes senior football players who are starters or significant reserves, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) throughout their college career. The NFF recognized 838 players from 267 college football programs at all levels. The entire list can be found on the National Football Foundation website, www.footballfoundation.org/.
Kreiter, a long snapper, is a native of DeWitt, Iowa. He will earn his degree in science education with a 3.5 GPA. He earned Academic All-Big Ten honors from 2011-13.
Kreiter played in all 13 games as a senior, handling all the long snaps for punts, PAT, and field goal attempts. He was named honorable mention All-Big Ten by league media in 2013.
Morris, a native of Solon, Iowa, carried a 3.87 GPA and will earn his degree in political science (pre-law). He earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in in each of the past three seasons, and was named to the Capital One First Team Academic All-America team the past two years. He is also a 2013 NFF National Scholar-Athlete.
Morris moved into Iowa’s starting lineup early in his freshman season and started 42 career games at linebacker. He totaled 400 career tackles, ranking sixth on Iowa’s career chart. Mooris ranked second on the team with 107 tackles in 2013, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors and was the Iowa recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Morris led the Hawkeyes in sacks (8), tackles for loss (18), and interceptions (4), becoming the first linebacker to lead Iowa in interceptions since the stat was first kept in 1986.
Van Sloten, an offensive lineman from Decorah, Iowa, will earn his degree in management and organization with a 3.56 GPA. He is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013, and was named to the Capital One District VI Academic All-American team in 2013.
Van Sloten started all 25 games his junior and senior seasons. He was named second-team All-Big Ten by league coaches and honorable mention All-Big Ten by league media.
The Hampshire Honor Society represents a powerful component in the NFF’s rich history as an innovator in promoting the scholar-athlete ideal. Since its inception in 1959, The NFF’s National Scholar-Athlete Awards program has awarded $10.4 million to 787 top scholars and community leaders.
