IOWA CITY, Iowa — Senior Theairra Taylor of the University of Iowa women’s basketball team has been invited to the Minnesota Lynx summer camp.
“I went to the Nashville overseas combine and played well,” said Taylor, a native of St. Paul, Minn. “A few people there took notice and I was invited to the Minnesota Lynx summer camp. I feel blessed to have the opportunity.”
Taylor, a former Central High School standout, started the last 70 games of her Hawkeye career, while playing in each of the last 101 games over the last three seasons.
“I am very happy for Theairra,” said UI head coach Lisa Bluder. “This is a great opportunity to showcase her abilities for the WNBA, and what better place to do it than your hometown?”
Taylor, a team co-captain, started all 36 games in 2013-14, leading Iowa to 27 wins, equaling the second-highest total in program history. She earned Iowa’s Coaches Award and Iowa’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award nomination. Taylor averaged a career-best 12.4 points per game, tallying career highs in assists (104), steals (60), field goal percentage (.475), and 3-point percentage (.372). She averaged 4.6 rebounds per game.
In Big Ten league games, Taylor ranked 19th in scoring (13.6), fifth in steals (1.9), 11th in assists (3.1), sixth in assist/turnover ratio (1.7), and ninth in field goal percentage (.503). She scored in double figures in 17 of the last 21 games, while registering nine points twice.
Taylor matched a career high with 22 points in Iowa’s win over Marist in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament (Mar. 23), making a career best and equaling an Iowa NCAA Tournament record with five 3-pointers.
She was named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll on March 3 after leading Iowa to wins over Ohio State and Illinois, averaging 19.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 4.5 steals and 2.0 blocks. Taylor led the Hawkeyes to a 65-61 victory over Ohio State on Feb. 27 inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Senior Night, posting a game-high 21 points, adding seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. She scored 10 points in the final 11:41 and tallied Iowa’s final four points to seal the win.
