IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head men’s tennis coach Steve Houghton announced that Lefteris Theodorou has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Hawkeyes in the fall of 2014.

“We’re thrilled that Lefteris made the decision to come to Iowa,” said Houghton. “He had many other great options and has enjoyed great success at the international level. He rounds out a terrific recruiting class, which ranks as one of the best in the nation.”

Theodorou, who chose Iowa over Arkansas, N.C. State, Santa Clara, and Elon, was the No. 1 ranked Greek player in U14, U16, and U18. Theodorou has been ranked as high as No. 131 in the ITF World Junior rankings, while also being ranked No. 31 in Europe. A Greek National Champion, Theodorou holds 72 career wins in the ITF Junior Circuit.

Theodorou has also competed throughout Europe in professional tournaments, achieving a ranking of No. 2006 in the ATP World Tour singles rankings, and No. 1590 in the ATP World Tour doubles rankings. Theodorou has excelled in double play while on the professional tour, appearing in the quarterfinals twice and the semifinals once.

A native of Athens, Greece, Theodorou was a semifinalist in the Grade 2 ITF Tournament in March 2014, a doubles finalist in the Grade 2 ITF tournament in February 2014, a doubles champion at the Grade 3 ITF tournament in Israel in November 2013, a finalist in the Grade 3 ITF Tournament in September 2013, and the champion of the Grade 5 ITF Tournament in July 2013.

“I chose Iowa because I instantly felt like I was at home,” said Theodorou. “I thought this was the school that I would like to spend the four most important years of my life at; training hard and competing as a Hawkeye.”
