IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz was selected by Houston in the third round of Friday’s NFL Draft. Fiedorowicz was the 65th player picked overall.
Fiedorowicz, a native of Johnsburg, Illinois, is the first Hawkeye tight end drafted since Tony Moeaki in 2010. He is the eighth Hawkeye tight end chosen in the NFL Draft since 2000.
In 13 games last season, the 6-foot-7, 265-pound Fiedorowicz caught 30 passes for 299 yards and six touchdowns. He was named first team All-Big Ten Conference by league coaches and second team by league media.
Fiedorowicz was named most outstanding tight end/wide receiver at the 2014 Senior Bowl. He completed his career with at least one pass reception in 31 straight games, ranking second among Football Bowl Subdivision tight ends. One of nine Hawkeye true freshmen to see action in 2010, Fiedorowicz finished his career with 91 catches for 899 yards (9.9 yards per catch) and 10 touchdowns.
Iowa has now had at least one player drafted in every NFL Draft since 1978.
In 2013, the Texans finished 2-14, fourth in the AFC South Division. Bill O’Brien, who spent the past two seasons as head coach at Penn State, is in his first season with the Texans. Houston had the first pick in the 2014 draft, selecting South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.
Fiedorowicz is the 53rd player coached by Kirk Ferentz at the University of Iowa to be selected in the NFL Draft.
