EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Iowa 400-meter relay team set a school record and Zinnia Miller earned first team All-America honors today at the 2014 NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships.
The men’s 400-meter relay team broke the school record en route to a sixth-place semifinal finish and a spot in the event finals. The team of senior Tevin-Cee Mincy, freshman O’Shea Wilson, sophomore James Harrington, and junior Keith Brown crossed the line in 39.19. The previous school record was set at the 2013 NCAA Championships by Mincy and former Hawkeyes Justin Austin, Ethan Holmes, and Josh Larney. The Hawkeyes will race for the national title Saturday at 4:03 p.m. (CT).
“We are just really excited about where we are,” said assistant coach Joey Woody. “Setting a school record at the last meet of the year is what you are always hoping to do, and I still think we have more left in the tank for Saturday.”
Miller recorded a personal-best mark of 20-11 ¾ (6.39m) on her fifth attempt in the long jump to earn first team All-America honors with a fifth-place finish. Her mark ranks second all-time at Iowa. The senior will also compete in the triple jump on Friday at 5:25 p.m. (CT).
“I think she has come a long way,” said assistant coach Clive Roberts. “It was an awesome way to finish her career in the long jump. It could not have gone any better.”
The women’s 400-meter relay team of sophomore Lake Kwaza, freshman Elexis Guster, sophomore MonTayla Holder, and freshman Brittany Brown finished 16th overall in 45.02.
Holder also raced in the women’s 400-meter hurdles. The sophomore crossed the line in 1:01.70 to finish 23rd.
Brittany Brown will represent the Hawkeyes in the 200 meters tomorrow at 6:15 p.m. (CT).
