IOWA CITY, Iowa — Incoming freshmen Josh Silverstein and Jake Jacoby both recently competed in the USTA Boy’s National Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The hard courts tournament is the biggest junior tournament in the United States, with the winner earning a wild card berth to play in the main draw at the U.S. Open in New York.
Silverstein entered the tournament seeded No. 30 in the main draw. The native of Great Neck, New York, opened the championships with a pair of victories over Alan Sweet (6-3, 6-0) and Pater Leung (6-3, 6-4). Silverstein dropped his Round of 32 match to Ernesto Escobedo (6-2, 6-2) and also his third round consolation match to University of Washington commit Jake Douglas (6-2, 6-0).
In doubles competition, Silverstein was partnered with Charles Shewalter. The duo won their opening match (6-3, 1-6, 10-6) in the Round of 128 before falling to the No. 5 seed doubles team of Nishimura/Griffith (6-3, 6-0).
Jacoby notched three singles victories in the qualifying draw to advance to the 128-player main draw. Jacoby topped Jesse Ruder-Hook (7-5, 7-5), a Denver University commit in Round One. The native of Little Rock, Arkansas, then bounced Asher Hirsch (7-5, 6-1) in the second round before beating Michigan State commit Michael Dube (6-4, 6-3) to earn a spot in the main draw.
In the main draw, Jacoby fell to Aaron Sandberg in three sets (6-2, 6-7, 6-2) in the Round of 128. In the consolation rounds, Jacoby beat Rajul Chikkalingaiah (6-0, 6-2) before falling to Daniel Gealer in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 6-10).
