IOWA CITY, Iowa —As always in these technology-driven times, the start of the men’s college basketball season comes with some questions about “Where can I watch my Hawkeyes?” The 2014-15 season for Fran McCaffery‘s nationally ranked Hawkeyes will begin tonight against Hampton. That game is available to watch on “ESPN3.”

ESPN3

The Iowa men’s basketball team plays five home games that will be available live worldwide on ESPN3: Nov. 14, 17, 24, and 26, and Dec. 22.

ESPN3 is one of the networks of the ESPN family of networks. It is not television, however; it is a “Digital Network,” meaning ESPN3 is video made available on your computer or other select devices that stream video content. You can find it HERE.

ESPN3 is typically available at no additional cost. It is a service offered by your cable television source. For example, a subscriber to Mediacom cable television can gain access to ESPN3 content on their computer or on my phone by “authenticating” their device (computer, phone, Xbox, ect.)

What is “authentication”? Authentication is the process of instructing your device that you are a subscriber to Mediacom, for example, and by providing either an account number or an email/password combination.

When you correctly “authenticate,” you gain access to the video provided by ESPN3 and, the next time you attempt to access this content, you skip all of the steps to gain access, e.g. your device “remembers” you, and you are simply provided the menu of programming available.

What is “Watch ESPN”?

Watch ESPN is an “app.” It is the tool fans of the Hawkeyes will want to install onto their iPad or Android phone, for example, to be able to watch programming on ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN U, ESPN3, etc., etc., on that device.

MC22 (Mediacom Connections Channel)

The Iowa men’s basketball team also plays two home games that will be available live on Mediacom cable television’s “Connections” channel (MC22): Nov. 29 and Dec. 6, exclusively, with one note: These events will also be available on BTN Plus.

BTN Plus

BTN Plus is a subscription service that is available via BTN2Go, which is the Big Ten Network’s equivalent to “Watch ESPN.” There are two types of content available there: Free and subscription. Free content is that which is available on BTN’s linear network (television). It is free to fans who have purchased a cable or satellite television package that includes BTN. BTN Plus content requires a subscription and is available only in the digital universe and on devices like iPads, Android phones, etc.
