IOWA CITY, Iowa — Three Hawkeyes combined to score three goals in the University of Iowa field hockey team’s, 3-1, victory over Michigan State on Friday afternoon at Grant Field. With the win, Iowa improves to 9-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
“Today was great,” said UI head coach Lisa Cellucci. “This was a complete 70-minute effort for us. We executed all parts of the game plan that we wanted to.”
Michigan State took a 1-0 lead in 13th minute and held Iowa scoreless for nearly the entire first half. That was until sophomore Veronique Declercq scored with two minutes to play before halftime. Sophomore Melissa Progar set Declercq up perfectly after securing a penalty corner send in from freshman Makenna Grewe. Declercq’s goal was her fifth of the year.
Junior Sophie Plasteras and junior Chandler Ackers each added goals of their own in the 50th and 60th minute marks. Ackers’ goal was her eighth of the year, and third in two games.
“Sophie played great today,” said Cellucci. “She was unbelievable and her stick was like a magnet. I couldn’t be happier for her.”
Iowa dominated statistically, outshooting Michigan State, 19-4, while boasting an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners. The Hawkeyes also limited the Spartans to four shots on the day.
“I am most proud of our effort defensively,” said Cellucci. “We were great on the pressing side and really took Michigan State out of their attack.”
The Hawkeyes return to Grant Field on Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT) for a conference bout against Ohio State. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus on BTN2go.com.
