IOWA CITY, Iowa — Seventy University of Iowa student-athletes have been named to the 2016 Big Ten Winter Academic All-Conference team. The list includes student-athletes from men’s basketball (4), women’s basketball (6), men’s gymnastics (9), women’s gymnastics (6), men’s swimming and diving (20), women’s swimming and diving (15) and wrestling (10).
The 20 men’s swimming and diving selections shatters the school record of 13 set three times, while the nine men’s gymnastics honorees ties the school record. The six women’s gymnastics recipients are the most since 2012
The Big Ten Conference recognized 780 winter sports student-athletes, including 41 men’s and 69 women’s basketball players, 64 men’s and 62 women’s gymnasts, 72 men’s hockey players, 157 men’s and 203 women’s swimmers and divers and 112 wrestlers. At least 12 of these student-athletes have maintained unblemished cumulative GPAs, including Iowa women’s basketball junior Ally Disterhoft and women’s swimming and diving senior Maddie Bro.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten, student-athletes must be letterwinners and be in at least their second academic year at the institution. They must also carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
