Hawkeyes Close Season at NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team competed its season at the NCAA Championships inside St. John Arena Saturday.

Senior Jack Boyle (all-around), senior Matt Loochtan (all-around), junior Cory Paterson (high bar), sophomore Dylan Ellsworth (parallel bars, vault), and sophomore Austin Hodges (high bar) joined Stanford, Penn State, Illinois, Oklahoma, Minnesota, and Ohio State on day two of the NCAA Championships.

Loochtan rotated with Ohio State while Boyle rotated with Illinois.

Iowa had a team high four Hawkeyes compete on high bar. Making his first NCAA individual finals appearance, Hodges tied for 25th overall with a score of 14.350. Paterson, also making his NCAA finasl debut, tied for 37th, recording a score of 13.750. Boyle placed 14th overall with a 14.600 effort and Loocthan finished 43rd with a 13.200.

Ellsworth, the second Hawkeye to make his NCAA finals, tied for 26th with a score of 14.700. Loochtan tied for 13th overall with a score of 14.900, while Boyle notched a 14.300 for 37th place.

Loochtan tied for 15th place on floor with a score of 14.500. Boyle recorded a 14.150, tying for 32nd place.

On pommel horse Boyle tied for 32nd (13.600) and Loochtan placed 40th overall (13.050).

Loochtan fell .200 shy of being named an All-American on rings with a score of 14.800 and placed 11th overall. Boyle tied for 34th overall with a 13.950.

On parallel bars, Ellsworth led the Hawkeyes, tying for 18th with a score of 14.300. Loochtan recorded a 13.700 for 32nd and Boyle finished in 43rd with a 13.000.

In the all-around, Loochtan tied for 10th overall, missing the cut for being named an All-American by 1.000. Boyle placed 14th overall with a 83.600.

Oklahoma won the team competition with a score of 443.400 followed by Stanford (434.050), Ohio State (433.050), Illinois (423.750), Penn State (425.400), and Minnesota (424.400).

The Hawkeyes return to Iowa City tomorrow to look ahead to 2017.
