IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior offensive lineman Sean Welsh has been named to the 2016 Rimington Trophy Spring Watch List. The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I college football.
Welsh started all 14 games a year ago, including the 2016 Rose Bowl. Welsh started 12 contests at guard and two at tackle. During spring practice, the Springboro, Ohio, native shifted to center.
Welsh was an honorable mention all-conference selection in 2015. Behind Welsh and the offensive line, the Hawkeye rushing attack totaled 2,544 yards and 35 touchdowns in 14 games, including 294 yards and five scores in a victory at Northwestern. That same unit was also crucial in the passing game, which accounted for 2,862 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Graduating senior Austin Blythe was one of three finalists for the award last season.
Welsh and the Hawkeyes open the 2016 season by hosting Miami (OH) on Sept. 3 inside Kinnick Stadium.
