Menzel Adds Transfer, Iowa City Native for 2016

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head women’s golf coach Megan Menzel announced Thursday two additions — Shawn Rennegarbe and Sarah Overton — to the 2016 roster. Rennegarbe transfers from Arkansas with three years of eligibility remaining, while Overton joins the Hawkeyes as a freshman this fall.

Rennegarbe comes to the Hawkeyes after two seasons in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Addieville, Illinois, native redshirted her freshman year and did not see tournament action in her sophomore campaign.

A three-time all-state selection out of Nashville Community High School, Rennegarbe went to Arkansas as one of Illinois’ top golfers. She finished ninth as a freshman at the state tournament, fourth as a sophomore, second as a junior, and fourth as a senior. She helped her team to third, second, and fourth place finishes before winning the state title her senior season. The four-time team and individual conference champion broke every individual high school record in her four-year career.

“We are fired up about Shawn joining our roster this fall,” said Menzel. “She is motivated and excited about the next three years. We know she has a lot of good golf ahead of her, and that she can make a difference for the Hawkeyes.”

A multisport athlete, Rennegarbe was also a four-year letterwinner in basketball. She helped her team to a state championship in 2013 and a fourth-place finish in 2014. Rennegarbe’s 1,169 career points ranks sixth on Nashville High School’s all-time scoring list.

Rennegarbe also excels in the classroom. She was named to the 2014 IHSA All-State Academic Team and was the valedictorian of her class.

“Shawn had a lot of success on the junior level and had a solid summer,” Menzel added. “She feels really good about where her game is at coming into this fall season. She is a great student-athlete and our team is looking forward to welcoming her to Iowa City.”

Overton was a three-time all-state selection out of City High School. The Iowa City, Iowa, native was a four-time first team all-conference and all-district honoree. She was named the Mississippi Valley Conference Golfer of the Year in 2015 and 2016, and registered top-10 finishes at the state meet in 2016 (sixth) and 2015 (10th). Overton holds numerous City High school records, including best nine-hole round (36), best 18-hole round (74), lowest season average, and most birdies in a season.

“Sarah has been a Hawkeye her entire life, and we are very happy to have her join our team this fall,” said Menzel. “She will redshirt this freshman year and we know she will have a great year of learning and growth. She will be a solid contributor for our team both on and off the golf course.”

A multisport athlete, Overton was also a two-year letterwinner in basketball. She was named Iowa City High’s Outstanding Female Athlete in 2016.

The Hawkeyes open the 2016 season at the Red Raider Invitational in Lubbock, Texas, Sept. 12-13.
