MINNANPOLIS — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team posted an 11-4 singles record and 6-2 doubles mark on Day 2 of the Gopher Invite in Minneapolis.
The Hawkeyes won a pair of doubles flights Friday. Elise van Heuvelen and Zoe Douglas won a pair of matches 6-2, 6-4, and Aborabol Huckleby and Carin Runefelt won consecutive matches 6-4, 6-2.
“Today was a good day for our team,” said UI head coach Sasha Schmid. “I saw improvement in doubles from yesterday’s matches. I was impressed with the team’s determination to make some positive changes.”
Four Hawkeyes advanced to the semifinals in their respective singles brackets. Van Heuvlen, Huckleby, Aimme Tarun, Taylor Tamblyn will all play in semifinal matches Saturday afternoon.
Van Heuvelen defeated University of Wisconsin Milwaukee’s Labina Petrovska, 6-4, 6-2. The freshman then went on to defeat Minnesota’s Annemaire Emme, 6-0, 6-4.
“It was great to see Elise have a great first full day competing in singles and doubles as a Hawkeye,” said Schmid. “And it was really encouraging to see us to compete in singles today. I liked our fight.”
After dropping the first set, 6-2, Huckleby got hot and defeated Rita Timakova from Iowa State, 6-4, 10-5. In her second match, Huckleby defeated Faith Lee from University of South Dakota in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
Tarun also dropped the first set in her first match, but bounced back to defeat Rylee Tucker 6-1, 10-7. The senior won her second match in two set, defeating Nanette Nylund from University of South Dakota 7-5, and 7-6.
Tamblyn won both of her matches in straight sets. The sophomore defeated Isabella Franks from Iowa State, 6-1, 6-3. In round two, Tamblyn defeated Iowa State’s Natalie Phippin 6-1, 6-3.
The Gopher Invite continues tomorrow. There will be two rounds of doubles matches that start at 9 a.m. (CT). The singles matches will begin after the doubles conclude. The singles matches are set to begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
