MINNEAPOLIS – Three goals in the second half gave No. 17 Minnesota a 3-0 victory over the University of Iowa soccer team at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Thursday night.
“Tough result for our team against a well-coached and offensively dangerous team,” said UI head coach Dave DiIanni. “I give high marks for how hard our team played and competed tonight and unfortunately when you open yourself up defensively while you are a goal down, chasing a tie, it lends itself from getting away from you real fast at the end.”
Iowa took three shots in the first half, Kaleigh Haus fired a ball at the goal that was blocked in the 12th minute, Bri Toelle’s strike in the 32nd minute was wide left, and Corey Burns came close in the 37th minute.
After a scoreless first half, Minnesota’s Josee Stiever scored off an advanced ball from Simone Kolander in the 60th minute and again in the 86th minute, giving the Gophers the 2-0 advantage with less than five minutes in the match.
Minnesota managed to find the back of the net one last time in the 88th minute of play, when Simone Kolander scored her 10th goal of the season off an assist from April Bockin, locking up the Gophers’ 10th win this season.
Minnesota finished with a 15-4 advantage in shots for the game. Goalkeeper Claire Graves played all 90 minutes between the posts for the Hawkeyes, making four saves.
“There are areas we certainly can improve upon still as a program this year,” said DiIanni. “Effort, competitive spirit, and willing to invest in a game plan has progressively gotten better each game this season.”
The Hawkeyes (7-7-0, 1-5-0) will face Wisconsin on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) in Madison.
