Hawkeyes Begin ITA Regionals

MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Iowa of women’s tennis team was 6-1 on the opening day of the ITA Regionals on Thursday.
 
“It was a good first day,” said UI head coach Sasha Schmid. “We saw some exciting progress in some matches, and also identified some important areas for us to focus on improving for the team.”
 
Freshman Elise van Heuvelen, senior Aimee Tarun, junior Zoe Douglas, junior Anastasia Reimchen, and sophomore Adorabol Huckleby all won matches Thursday.
 
van Heuvelen won her match in straight sets. The freshman defeated Allison Quammen from Arkansas State, 6-0, 6-1.
 
Tarun defeated Missouri States’ Fatima Khamissi, 6-3,6-1, and Douglas also won in straight sets defeating Oklahoma’s Simran Sethi 6-4, 6-2.
 
Reimchen was the only Hawkeye who played two matches of singles play Thursday. The junior won both her matches in straight sets, defeating Missouri State’s Alye Darter 6-4, 6-2, and Iowa State’s Maty Cancin 7-6, 6-2.
 
Huckleby defeated Sydney Harlow from Nebraska, 6-1, 7-6.
 
Douglas, Reimchen, Huckleby, van Heuvelen, and Tarun will participate in the round of 64 in the second day of the ITA Regionals tomorrow.
