LAWRENCE, Kansas — Four University of Iowa rowing crews recorded top-five finishes at the Jayhawk Jamboree on Sunday. The Hawkeyes’ Varsity 8+ and Novice 8+ crews headlined an event that featured a record number of boat entries from college and club teams across the country. With Iowa’s top varsity crews competing at the Head of Charles in Boston, Massachusetts, Iowa’s crew members at Kansas were asked to perform at an advanced level in a head race competition on the Kansas River at Burcham Park.

“The University of Kansas put on a great event,” said UI assistant coach Megan Fitzpatrick. “With 14 of our top performers the Head of the Charles, it opened up the opportunity for us to race nearly our entire roster this weekend, and that’s pretty exciting.”

The Hawkeyes picked up two top-five finishes in the Novice 8+, including a runner-up performance from its top rookie crew. Iowa’s N8+ (A) finished seconds behind first-place Kansas State and in front of Big 12 crews from Kansas and Oklahoma.

“Our talent-transfer division of athletes showed some really encouraging results,” Fitzpatrick said. “We’ve put a dedicated focus into their development over the past couple months and they seized the opportunity to put that into a racing format.

“That group has only scratched the surface of the impact they will have on this team and as coaches, we are more than excited to for their future representing the University of Iowa.”

Iowa’s V8+ and V4+ placed fifth overall in their respective events. Tulsa won the V8+ in 13:02.60, and the V4+in 13:02.60.

“In the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ events, we saw a lot of athletes step up and grow through the challenge of racing up a level,” Fitzpatrick said. “They put on a performance that demonstrates the depth this team has within, and left the course even more focused on the goals that await us this spring.”

The Jayhawk Jamboree was the final fall event for the rowing program. The Hawkeyes open the 2017 spring championship season March 25 at Texas.
