Hawkeyes Bounce Back on Day 2 of Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – The University of Iowa women’s golf team posted a 297 (+9) in the second round of the Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational on Monday, bringing their team total to a 614 (+38) through 36 holes. The Hawkeyes shaved 20 strokes off their opening round team score on day two at El Tigre Golf Club.

Wisconsin leads the team race after firing a one-under-par 287 in the second round, they are +10 for the tournament. Iowa is currently in 13th.

“I am proud of the fight our team showed today and we definitely picked up some momentum this afternoon,” said UI head coach Megan Menzel. “It was a really solid team effort and good to see all seven players have a solid day.”

Junior Morgan Kukla posted a career low Monday afternoon utilizing five birdies to card a one-under-par 71. Kukla is competing as an individual and is tied for 27th.

“Today was a good bounce back from yesterday for our entire team,” said junior Morgan Kukla. “I was able to hit my start lines off the tee and I made more birdie putts. My last putt of the day was awesome because I ended up making an eight footer for birdie to go one-under and record my best tournament round ever.”

“It was great to see Morgan under par today,” said Menzel. “It is fun to see her continued growth as a player.”

Freshman Sophie Liu fired a one-over-par 73, advancing her 36-hole total to 152 (+8; 79, 73). Liu is tied for 34th with 18 holes left to play.

Junior Kristin Glesne registered five birdies to post a two-over-par 74. She is tied for 50th at 156 (+12; 82, 74).  

Junior Jessica Ip and senior Jessie Sindlinger each fired rounds of 75 (+3). Ip used three birdies to bring her two-day total to 150 (+6; 75, 75). She is tied for 23rd heading into the final round and is the highest ranked Hawkeye. Sindlinger is tied for 50th, with a 156 (+12; 81, 75) two-day total.

Sophomore Shawn Rennegarbe posted three birdies to card a 75 (+3) in the second round. She is tied for 47th competing as an individual. Elisa Suarez sits in 67th at 161 (+17) overall. The junior carded a four-over-par 76 in Monday’s second round.

Iowa concludes the Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational Tuesday morning with an 8:15 a.m. (CT) shotgun start. Live scoring is available on golfstat.com.
