IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa women’s tennis player Elise van Heuvelen was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and garnered first team All-Big Ten honors, the league office announced Thursday.
Van Heuvelen is the fifth Big Ten Freshman of the Year in program history, and the first All-Big Ten honoree since Ruth Seaborne (2013-14).
Van Heuvelen played all 22 matches at the No. 1 singles positions, recording a 13-9 mark and a 6-6 Big Ten record. She also finished with a 16-5 doubles recorded, including wins over Indiana’s No. 41 Madison Appel and Kim Schmider, and Michigan State’s No. 75 Davina Nguygen and Emily Metcalf. Van Heuvelen and junior Zoe Douglas were ranked as high as No. 80 in the ITA National Doubles Rankings.
Sophomore Adorabol Huckleby was named Iowa’s Sportsmanship Award winner. Huckleby registered a 12-10 singles record, playing at the No. 4, 5, and 6 positions. The sophomore finished with an 8-8 doubles recorded winning five of her las six matches at the No. 1 doubles position.
