Jewell Named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa senior linebacker Josey Jewell has been named to the 2017 Wuerffel Trophy Watch List. The announcement was made Tuesday by the All Sports Association.
 
The trophy is presented to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with academic achievement.
 
Jewell (6-foot-2, 236-pounds), a native of Decorah, Iowa, started all 13 games at middle linebacker, leading the team with 124 tackles, which was second in the Big Ten. Jewell was one of five finalists for the 2016 Butkus Award and a 2015 and 2016 team captain. He was named Iowa’s Most Valuable Player on defense and was named second team All-Big Ten by the Associated Press and Big Ten coaches and media. Jewell was also named to the 2017 Bednarik Watch List on July 10, Bronko Nagurski Watch List on July 13, and Butkus Award Watch List on July 17.
 
Semifinalists for the Wuerffel Trophy will be announced on Nov. 2 and finalists will be announced on Nov. 22. The winner of the Wuerffel Trophy will be announced at the National Football Foundation’s press conference in New York on Dec. 5 with the formal presentation of the award taking place at the 49th Annual All Sports Association Awards banquet on Feb. 16, 2018 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
