IOWA CITY, Iowa — The No. 17 University of Iowa field hockey team fell to Wake Forest, 3-2, in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at Grant Field on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Demon Deacons took an early 2-0 lead scoring in the fifth and eighth minutes.

The Hawkeyes battled back scoring on two corners in the 24th and 29th minutes, respectively.

The Demon Deacons scored on a penalty stroke in the 45th minute to take a 3-2 lead, and secure their first victory of the season.

QUOTING HEAD COACH LISA CELLUCCI
Being down two goals leaves no choice but to spark. We have a ton of newcomers in some key positions and we weren’t poised in the first 15 minutes and we gave up two goals. We settled down and we were able to gain possession and incrementally get ourselves back into the game.”

“We’ll debrief and go over North Carolina. They are an outstanding team, No. 1 in the country, but we can take a lot from what we did today into tomorrow.”

NOTABLES

  • Sophomore Katie Birch scored Iowa’s two goals off penalty corners in the first half to tie the score at 2-2.
  • Senior Melissa Progar and junior Makenna Grewe were each credited with two assists. Both assists set up Birch on the penalty corner goals.
  • Senior Katie Jones recorded four saves in the opening match of the 2017 season.
