IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa field hockey freshman Madeleine Murphy has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It is the first honor of Murphy’s career.

A native of Riana, Tasmania, Murphy is the first Hawkeye to earn Freshman of the Week honors since Sophie Sunderland was honored on Oct. 18 2016

In two matches against New Hampshire last week, Murphy logged 133 minutes including 77 minutes during Friday night’s overtime match. Murphy recorded two goals and two assists in Iowa’s 7-1 victory over New Hampshire on Sunday for a total of six points. Sunday’s match marked Murphy’s first-career multi-goal game. The freshman is second on the team and tied for third in the Big Ten in goals (5). She also ranks second on the team and is for fifth in the Big Ten in points (13).

Murphy and the Hawkeyes return to action Friday at 5 p.m. (CT) for their Big Ten opener against No. 3 Penn State in University Park, Pennsylvania.
