MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Senior Josh Silverstein and sophomore Kareem Allaf represented the University of Iowa men’s tennis team on day one of the 42nd annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Thursday.

The Hawkeyes started the young season off on the right foot with a win (9-8) versus the doubles team of Heredia and Verdu from Marquette. The win advanced the Hawkeye duo to the quarterfinals where they will face Virginia Tech’s Donato/Harper.

“It was a great confidence booster for us to win,” said Allaf. “I think that will get us going tomorrow for sure.”

Silverstein, the top-seeded singles player in the tournament squares off against Big Ten foe Martim Viela from Wisconsin at 8 a.m. (CT) on Friday. While Allaf lines up against Arkansas’ Josh Howard-Tripp at 9 a.m. (CT).

“I am really excited to play my first singles match of the season tomorrow, especially because Viela is from the Big Ten. I will be ready to get after it for sure.” Silverstein said.

The Milwaukee Tennis Classic is an ITA Gold Level Event; its men’s singles champion will receive an invitation to compete in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held November 1-5, in Palm Desert, California.
