TULSA, Okla. — Jake Jacoby, Joe Tyler, and Will Davies represented the University of Iowa men’s tennis team on day one of the ITA All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa.

The Hawkeyes got off to a good start, with Tyler defeating Julian Zlobinsky from Wake Forest 6-4, 6-1. The freshman advanced to the Round of 128 where he fell to Georgia Tech’s Chris Yun, 6-2, 6-0.

Jacoby took care of business in his only singles match of the day against Tulsa’s Mitch Pritchard, winning a close match 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5). Jacoby will continue his tournament run in the Round of 64 on Sunday.

Davies showcased his skills against Pelayo Antuna Meana from Troy, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

“I am happy to get my first win, my first time out,” said Davies. “It is a big confidence booster and I can’t wait to get back out there tomorrow.”

Iowa head coach Ross Wilson was encouraged by what he saw Saturday afternoon.

“It was good to see Joe and Will compete for the first time in college matches,” said Wilson. “Both guys have made significant improvements in practice over the past month and it was good to see them execute. Jake didn’t play his best today, but he competed at a high level and was able to manage to win two tough tiebreakers.”

Senior Josh Silverstein will compete on Monday in the main draw.
