EAST LANSING, Mich. — University of Iowa men’s tennis team won eight of its 11 singles matches Saturday at the Big Ten Singles Tournament at the Michigan State Indoor Tennis Facility.
Iowa advanced a Big Ten-best five student-athletes to the Round of 16, with freshman Piotr Smietana and junior Jonas Larsen each winning two matches.
“We had a very consistent effort from our guys today,” said UI head coach Ross Wilson. “This is definitely the best tournament collectively as a group we have had all fall.”
The day started with three Hawkeyes advancing to the Round of 32. Senior Jake Jacoby bounced Noah Sutter of Penn State (6-4, 6-1), Larsen beat Northwestern’s Michael Lorenzini (6-3, 6-1), and Smietana defeated Jacob Wareti of Ohio State in three sets (6-1, 5-7, 6-1).
In the Round of 32, five Hawkeyes advanced to the Round of 16. Freshmen Will Davies and Joe Tyler, and redshirt sophomore Kareem Allaf won their matches after earning a bye in the previous round. Davies downed Northwestern’s Jason Seidman (6-3, 6-3), Tyler bounced Alex Kim of Michigan State (6-1, 3-6, 6-1), and Allaf beat Michigan State’s Davis Wong (6-3, 7-6).
“Piotr and Will played great tennis today,” said Wilson. “They have been committed to making changes in their game over the last few months and they are seeing results from those changes in this tournament.”
