IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa junior Rogelio Vazquez and freshman Bennet Huang were named to the 2018 Big Ten Men’s Gymnast to Watch list, the conference office announced Thursday.
Vazquez, an Orlando, Florida, native, is included on the list for the first time in his career. He competed in every competition last season, setting a career-best on parallel bars at Nebraska on March 4. He tied for 15th on parallel bars during day one of the Big Ten and NCAA Championships, and went on to finish 40th on parallel bars during the second day of the 2017 NCAA Championships.
A native of Palo Alto, California, Huang earns his first watch list honor. One of three freshmen on the list, Huang is a five-time Junior National Team member, and a seven-time Northern California all-around champion. He was the all-around, floor, and pommel horse champion at the 2017 JO Nationals.
As a team, the Hawkeyes are ranked sixth in the Big Ten Men’s Gymnastics Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
Iowa opens the 2018 season on Jan. 13 at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago. The Hawkeyes begin their home slate on Feb. 3 against Illinois.
