LAS VEGAS – Senior Dylan Ellsworth, sophomore Nick Merryman, and freshman Bennet Huang competed in the preliminary sessions Thursday evening at the Winter Cup Challenge. Ellsworth and Huang advanced on to the finals on Saturday, while Merryman will be a second reserve.
MEET HIGHLIGHTS
Huang competed in the junior session, placing first in the all-around. He notched five top-10 finishes to secure his spot in the final session on Saturday. Ellsworth finished 18th in the all-around and recorded a top-10 finish on vault.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior Session: Huang competed in the junior session, finishing first in the all-around (77.600). He started the day off on vault, notching a 14.100 to tie for fourth-place. He tied for 20th on parallel bars (11.800) and earned his second top-five finish of the day on high bar, recording a 12.800. Huang kept reeling in the top-10 finishes, tying for sixth on floor (13.100), third on pommel horse (13.100), and sixth on rings (12.700). Hawkeye signee Evan Davis finished eighth in the all-around (75.300) and is moving on to the final session on Saturday.
Senior Session: Ellsworth and Merryman competed in the senior session Thursday night. Ellsworth finished 18th in the all-around with a 77.500. Merryman followed in 20th in with a 76.800. Ellsworth notched a top-10 finish on vault, recording a 14.300 to tie for eighth.
Merryman finished 13th on pommel horse with a 13.250 and tied for 14th on parallel bars (13.350). Ellsworth tied for 15th on floor with a 13.650 and tied for 15th with Merryman on rings (13.200).
UP NEXT
Huang and Ellsworth advance to the final session on Saturday. Competition is scheduled to begin at 9:15 p.m. (CT).
