IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team collected its first conference win of the season Sunday after its 4-3 defeat of Michigan State at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.
The Hawkeyes started strong as they grabbed the doubles point from the Spartans with wins on courts one and two.
Sophomore Elise van Heuvelen and senior Anastasia Reimchen paired at No. 1 to take down Davina Nguyen and Emily Metcalf, 7-5. Senior Zoe Douglasand junior Adorabol Huckleby saw a 7-5 victory on court two.
In singles action, Reimchen registered her first Big Ten win of the season, bouncing Sarah Kuuttila, 6-3, 6-3, to clinch the match for the Hawkeyes. Van Heuvelen (6-3, 6-1) and Huckleby (6-3, 6-4) also posted wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 position respectively.

“Today was an absolutely incredible match for us. We’ve been going through a tough stretch as a group and it’s been tough to have some setbacks that were really out of our control. I felt like the team wouldn’t let this season go and they didn’t. Today they fought with such incredible spirit. I know this win just looks like a win but for those that are a part of this team and this program know, the way these women showed grit and tenacity to and came back from a set back is something that none of us will ever forget. Of course, it’s good to get that first conference win but this one mean more to us.
We’ve had to completely change doubles teams so for us to come out and get the doubles point with new combos was incredible. I think we closed out matches well today in doubles and singles.
I think it’s important for me to say how much respect I have for Michigan State. Kim Bruno is a new coach there and it is just a really good program.”
