IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery announced on Wednesday that freshman Connor McCaffery has been rewarded with a scholarship beginning with the 2018-19 academic year. McCaffery has four years of men’s basketball eligibility remaining after his hardship waiver petition was approved by the Big Ten Conference last month.
“Connor went through a lot his freshman season, but remained positive despite suffering physical and health setbacks,” said McCaffery. “Although he did not play in many games last season, he was an important part of this team on and off the court and will continue to be the next four years. The coaching staff and I agreed that Connor has earned this scholarship and we look forward to his contributions the next four years.”
McCaffery (6-foot-5, 200 pounds) was hampered by an injury and multiple health setbacks throughout his freshman season, playing limited minutes in only four games.
McCaffery competed in seven Iowa state tournaments during his prep career at Iowa City West High School in basketball (4) and baseball (3). A four-year starter and an ESPN Top 100 recruit, he led West to the state tournament all four years. McCaffery led West as team captain to a 23-3 season and a Class 4A basketball state title as a senior, leading the team in scoring (19.6 ppg) and rebounding (4.8 rpg), while also averaging 3.7 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. McCaffery was the 2017 Des Moines Register Boys Basketball Player of the Year, Gazette-area Player of the Year, All Iowa Player of the Year, Conference Player of the Year, and State Tournament Most Valuable Player.
