IOWA CITY, Iowa — Third-ranked Ohio State posted a 4-0 victory over the University of Iowa men’s tennis team on Friday in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex.
For just the eighth time in 31 matches this season, Iowa dropped the doubles point. Ohio State registered wins on courts one (6-2) and two (6-3), with Iowa’s Jake Jacoby and Joe Tyler leading 5-4 on court three when the doubles point was clinched.
The Buckeyes entered this week’s tournament with five of their six singles players nationally ranked. Ohio State recorded victories on courts two, three, and six to improve to 27-2 on the season.
Sophomore Kareem Allaf entered today’s match having won nine consecutive matches and was leading his match on court four, 7-6(2), 4-1, when the match was clinched. Senior Josh Silverstein was involved in an exciting match on court one, taking on fifth-ranked Mikael Torpegaard. The Big Ten Athlete of the Year edged Silverstein in the first set, 7-6 by virtue of winning 11-9 in the tiebreak. Silverstein was leading 2-1 in the second set when the match was clinched.
“I thought we played a good match. Ohio State is a really good team. They are No. 3 in the country and have won 10 of the last 12 Big Ten tournaments. I’m proud of the effort of our guys today and all season long. It’s been a good year. We have advanced the program. I am thankful for seniors Josh and Jake. They have meant a lot to the rise of this program over the past four years. Now it’s the freshmen and sophomores’ turn to carry the torch and take us to the next level.”
“Josh and I hope that we changed the culture here. We have a young team with a lot of returners next year. I’m excited to follow them and see them reach new heights. They will take this program back to the NCAA Tournament soon.”
