IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head men’s golf coach Tyler Stith announced the 2018-19 schedule on Friday. The Hawkeyes will play in 11 regular season tournaments and hosts the annual Golfweek Conference Challenge at the Cedar Rapids Country Club in September and the Hawkeye Invitational in April.
The Hawkeyes begin fall play at the Gopher Invitational (Sept. 9-10) in Independence, Minnesota, before hosting the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Cedar Rapids, Iowa (Sept. 16-18).
Iowa then travels to the Erin Hills Intercollegiate in Erin, Wisconsin (Sept. 30-Oct. 2) and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic in South Bend, Indiana (Oct. 7-8), before concluding the fall slate at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas for the second consecutive season (Oct. 22-23).
The Hawkeyes open their spring campaign playing two tournaments in Florida — the Black and Gold Alumni Challenge in Naples (Jan. 26) and the Big Ten Match Play in Palm Coast (Feb. 8-9). Iowa will also compete at the Puerto Rico Classic (Feb. 24-26) in Rio Grande before teeing it up at the Colleton River Collegiate (March 4-5) in Bluffton, South Carolina.
Iowa will compete in the Dual in the Ozarks on March 10, before closing out the regular season by hosting the annual Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course (April 20-21). The Hawkeyes finished second in their home event last season.
The Hawkeyes open postseason play April 26-29, at the 2019 Big Ten Championships in Philadelphia. The 2019 Men’s Division I Golf Regionals will be played at six different host sites (May 13-15), while the NCAA Championships take place at Blessings Golf Course in Fayetteville, Arkansas (May 24-29).
Iowa returns seven letterwinners and welcomes two newcomers to the 2018-19 team. The squad is led by junior Alex Schaake and senior Matthew Walker. Schaake was a 2018 All-Big Ten second team selection and led the Hawkeyes with an 18-hole average of 71.88, the fourth lowest average in Hawkeye history since the 1991-92 season. Schaake was also named a 2018 Division I PING All-Midwest Regional selection and led Iowa in top-10 finishes (4). Walker ranked second on the team with a 72.87 average in 31 rounds and two top-20 finishes.
