Iowa City, Iowa— University of Iowa Student-Athletes Academic Services has recognized junior Alex Schaake (men’s golf) and senior Taylor Louis (volleyball) as September’s male and female student-athletes of the month.
The honor, voted by their peers, recognizes student-athletes who have excelled not only in their sports, but in the classroom as well.
Schaake posted two top-10 finishes in both tournaments he played in September, shooting at or below par in all five rounds. Schaake was named Big Ten Golfer of the week after firing a five-under-par 36-hole total of 139, including seven birdies, to help Iowa place second as a team at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Schaake’s performance was a seasons best. Individually, Schaake tied for second place in the Golfweek Conference Challenge and tied for sixth at the Gopher Invitational.
Louis helped Iowa to an 8-3 (2-2 Big Ten) record in September. She is currently the NCAA’s DI active career leader in kills with 1,814. Louis was named the Cyclone Classic MVP on Sept.15, leading Iowa to victories over Iowa State, Syracuse, and Wyoming. She averaged 18.3 kills and 2.6 digs in the tournament. She tied a career-high with five total blocks against Michigan on Sept.23 and ranks fourth in the Big Ten in kills per set with 4.13.
Schaake and the Hawkeyes travels to the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas, Texas.
Louis is back in action this weekend as the volleyball team looks for another upset this weekend against No.17 Purdue.
