TULSA, Oklahoma — University of Iowa men’s tennis junior Kareem Allaf advanced to the semifinals at the ITA Central Regionals at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa. He is the first Hawkeye to accomplish the feat since 2014, when Matt Hagan reached the semifinals. In 1999, former Hawkeye Tyler Cleveland won the Regional title.
Action began Saturday morning with the Round of 16, Allaf bested freshman teammate Oliver Okonkwo in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Allaf advanced to the quarterfinals by winning his fifth straight match defeating the 45th ranked player in the country, Stefan Milicevic of Minnesota, 6-3, 7-6(4). Will Davies was edged by the 70th ranked player from Oklahoma, Jake Van Emburgh in a third set tiebreak, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(4).
In quarterfinal doubles main draw action, Davies and Okonkwo dropped their match against Oklahoma State’s Dubinski/Vogel, 8-4.
In extra matches the Hawkeyes faired well. Joe Tyler picked up two wins, Piotr Smietana, Jason Kerst, and Nikita Snezhko all won matches. Jonas Larsen dropped a pair matches.
Allaf will square off against Wichita State’s Murkel Dellien in the singles semifinals at 10 a.m. (CT).
