Okonkwo, Tyler Finish Day One in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas — Two University of Iowa student-athletes wrapped up the first day of action at the Longhorn Invitational on Friday. Freshman Oliver Okonkwo and sophomore Joe Tyler represented the Hawkeyes. 
 
In the Round of 16, Tyler defeated Eddie Gutierrez of Liberty in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Conversely in the same round, Auburn’s Brandon Laubser dropped Okonkwo, 6-2, 7-6(2). 

In the quarterfinals, Tyler picked up his second win of the day over St. Edwards’ Luis Dias Argente in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. In consolation play, Marcus Walters of Tyler Junior College defeated Okonkwo, 6-1, 6-3.    

In the doubles, Brett Meyers and Brandon Shanklin of Marquette downed the Hawkeye tandem, 8-2, in the quarterfinals. 

Okonkwo and Tyler will compete again tomorrow.
