LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team began play at the Rebel Tennis Women’s Invitational with one doubles win and four singles wins at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Friday.
Freshman duo Michelle Bacalla and Sophie Clark topped Liang and Surapeneni from North Texas, 6-3, to advance to the double’s semifinal tomorrow.
Sophomore Ashleigh Jacobs and freshman Samantha Mannix fell, 6-3, to Bridgforth and Rush from Texas Tech. The sophomore tandem of Danielle Bauers and Danielle Burich dropped their set, 6-3, against Asano and Li from UNLV.
Mannix is advancing to the single semifinals after winning 6-4 in two straight sets over Emma Wilson from Arizona.
Bacalla is advancing after winning in three sets over Alex Sabe from Purdue, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. Senior Adorabol Huckleby topped Alexandra Heczey from North Texas to advance to tomorrow’s semifinal, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Burich advances after besting Abby Warner from Air Force in two sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Clark fell in two sets in a single’s match against Anna Bogoslavets from UNLV, 6-0, 6-4. Jacobs was topped in her singles match against Maria Medina from Liberty, 6-4, 5-7, 6-0.
