AUSTIN, Texas — University of Iowa men’s tennis Oliver Okonkwo and Joe Tyler competed at the Longhorn Invitational on Saturday. Individually and as a tandem they swept their competition. 

In singles play, Tyler dropped Eddie Gutierrez of Liberty for his third straight win, 6-1, 6-3. Okonkwo picked up his first singles win of the weekend defeating, UCF’s Alan Rubio in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. 

In doubles play, Okonkwo and Tyler hit their stride winning two matches. The Hawkeye duo bested LSU’s Ruy Texeira and Texas’ Johnny Goodwin, 8-2. Additionally, the pair defeated Jackson Cobb and Tommy Mylnikov of Texas Tech in the Flight C Championship, 8-4. 

“I saw a lot of great things out of Joe and Oliver today. They competed hard from the beginning to end which earned them the results they wanted,” said assistant coach Joey Manilla. “I’m excited for them to carry this momentum into tomorrow.”
