The University of Iowa men’s golf team travels to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, for the 27th annual Puerto Rico Classic, Feb. 17-19.
 
TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE

THE FIELD
No. 40 Iowa is joined by a field of 14 other teams that include: Purdue, No. 5 Alabama, No. 12 Clemson, East Carolina, No. 21 Georgia, No. 4 Georgia Tech, Maryland, No. 31 Marquette, Middle Tennessee State, UNC Greensboro, No. 28 N.C. State, Ohio State, No. 13 Oklahoma and Virginia Tech (GolfStat Rankings).
 
FIRST ROUND PAIRING
Iowa will be paired with No. 28 N.C. State and No. 31 Marquette for the first round.
 
THE LINEUP
The lineup for the Puerto Rico Classic includes one senior (Matthew Walker), two juniors (Alex Schaake and Benton Weinberg), one sophomore (Jake Rowe), and one freshman (Gonzalo Leal Montero).
 
THE COURSE
The Puerto Rico Classic will be played at the Rio Mar Country Club. Play will take place on the River Course (par-72, 6,902 yards), designed by two-time Major champion Greg Norman along the Mameyes River.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Hawkeyes finished 12th at the Big Ten Match Play Championships after posting a 1-3-0 record. Iowa recorded its lone win against Minnesota, 4.5-1.5, in the final round. Four Hawkeyes — Walker, Weinberg, Schaake, and Rowe — secured two individual victories.  Walker posted the best individual record, finishing 3-1-0. Weinberg, Schaake, and Rowe all finished with an individual record of 2-2-0.
 
HISTORICALLY AT THE PUERTO RICO CLASSIC
This will be Iowa’s first appearance in the tournament and first time competing in Puerto Rico.
MATCH PLAY SUCCESS
Three Hawkeyes — Walker, Weinberg, and Schaake — have career winning records at the Big Ten Match Play Championships. Walker has a career record of 12-3-1. Weinberg’s career record is 4-3-1, while Schaake has posted a 6-5-1 record.
 
COMPETING WITH THE BEST
Iowa has competed against seven teams ranked in the top-25 of the GolfStat Rankings, including No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 7 SMU, and No. 9 Texas. This week’s field includes five top-25 teams and two teams ranked in the top-10 — No. 4 Georgia Tech and No. 5 Alabama.
 
RECORD PERFORMANCE
The Hawkeyes etched  their name into the program record books for their performance at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic. Iowa carded a 277 (-7) in the final round to tie for the sixth lowest 18-hole score in program history. Schaake’s 54-hole score of 203 (-10) set a new school record, while his 67 (-4) in the final round tied for the fifth lowest 18-hole score. Weinberg’s 54-hole score of 205 (-8) set a new career best and tied Raymond Knoll for the second lowest 54-hole score.
 
SCHAAKE LEADING THE WAY
Schaake leads the Hawkeyes,  posting nine of his 14 rounds this season at or below par. The Omaha, Nebraska, native has registered the top individual finish for Iowa in two of their five tournaments, finishing tied for second at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and tied for seventh at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic. Schaake fired all three rounds below par at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic, including two four-below (67). He leads Iowa with four top-20 finishes, three top-10 finishes, a stroke average of 70.7, and is tied for the team lead low 18-hole score of 67.
 
STAYING HOT IN THE WINTER
Junior Alex Schaake and senior Matthew Walker competed in the 2018 South Beach International Amateur, Dec. 19-22, at the Miami Beach Golf Club. Schaake finished eighth with a four-round score of 279 (-5). Walker posted a four-round score of 285 (+7), tying for 23rd.
 
HAWKEYE NEWCOMER
Sophomore Joe Kim joined the Iowa men’s golf program in January after transferring from Indian Hills Community College. The Castle Hill, NSW Australia, native led Indian Hills to the 2018 NJCAA National Championship. He recorded a fifth-place individual finish at the NJCAA Championship. Kim will be eligible to compete beginning with the Colleton River Collegiate (March 4-5).
 
STAYING BELOW PAR
Junior Benton Weinberg carded three-straight rounds below par at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic. He tied a career-low 18-hole score with a 67 (-4) in the second round. Weinberg has four rounds at or below par this season and a stroke average of 71.6.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Iowa will compete in the Colleton River Collegiate, March 4-5, in Bluffton, South Carolina.
