Nelson Selected by Tampa Bay in NFL Draft

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — University of Iowa junior defensive end Anthony Nelson was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round of Saturday’s NFL Draft in downtown Nashville. Nelson was the 107th player picked overall.
 
Nelson is the 12th defensive lineman under head coach Kirk Ferentz to be selected in the NFL Draft and the first since Jaleel Johnson was selected in the fourth round of the 2017 draft by Minnesota.

Nelson, a graduate of Waukee (Iowa) High School, ranked second in the Big Ten and 17th in the nation with 9.5 sacks while helping the Hawkeyes post a 9-4 record. He collected 45 tackles and was second on the team in tackles for loss (13.5).
 
Nelson earned second-team All-Big Ten honors. He was also a CoSIDA Academic All-America selection for the second straight year, earning second-team recognition in 2018 after earning first-team honors in 2017. He earned Academic All-Big Ten honors three straight years.
 
Tampa Bay posted a 5-11 record in 2018. Bruce Arians will be in his first season as the Buccanners head coach in 2019.
 
Iowa has had at least one player drafted in every NFL Draft since 1978, including nine first round selections. Nelson is the 69th player coached by Kirk Ferentz at the University of Iowa to be selected in the NFL Draft.
