IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Alex Schaake was named a preseason third-team All-American by Golfweek. He is the only Big Ten golfer on any of the three preseason teams.

Schaake, an Omaha, Nebraska, native, was named to the Big Ten’s Preseason Honors List yesterday after claiming the Big Ten’s Men’s Golf Player of the Year a year ago. As a junior, Schaake finished last season as the 43rd-ranked golfer in the country by Golfweek/Sagarin and earned Division I PING All-Midwest Region Team and unanimous All-Big Ten First Team recognition.

In his junior campaign, Schaake competed in all 11 events, averaging 71 strokes per 18 holes to claim the Les Bolstad Award, leading the Big Ten in stroke average. He led the Hawkeyes in rounds at or below par (17), top-10 finishes (5), top-20 finishes (6), and low 18-hole round (63). His best finish came at the Hawkeye Invitational where he claimed co-medalist honors, recording a school-record 54-hole score of 199 (-14).

The Hawkeyes begin the 2019 season at the Gopher Invitational, Sept. 8-9, in Minneapolis.
