Field Hockey Signs 7 for 2020

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Harper Dunne, Sammy Freeman, Sophia Mackrella, Mary Jane McNary, Kelly Rose, Alex Wesneski, and Amelia Williams have signed National Letters of Intent to attend the University of Iowa next fall, UI field hockey head coach Lisa Cellucci announced Monday. 
 
“We are so excited to welcome Alex, Sophia, Amelia, Sammy, Harper, Kelly, and MJ to the Iowa field hockey program,” Cellucci said. “They are wonderful people, students, and field hockey players. This is an outstanding class that will add depth to every line on the field. Their athleticism, speed, skill, competitiveness, and desire to compete at the highest level will allow them to make an impact immediately. We can’t wait for them to get on campus and help us build on the tradition of excellence within our program.”

Harper Dunne | 5-8 | MF
Fort Worth, Texas (Trinity Valley)

  • Two-time Trinity Valley Team Co-Captain (2018 and 2019) and team MVP (2018)
  • Three-time All-Southern Preparatory Conference honoree and all-region honoree
  • Played four years under coach Clarence Jennelle at Lonestar Field Hockey Club
  • Plays soccer and runs on the track and field team at Trinity Valley, earning all-region and all-conference honors
  • Was named a 2019 National Merit Commended Scholar 2019 for outstanding SAT performance
  • Member of the National Honors Society and four-time Headmaster’s List honoree

 
Sammy Freeman | 5-7 | MF/D
Whitehouse Station, N.J. (Hunterdon Central Regional)

  • Named 2018 team MVP and 2019 team captain
  • 2018 MAX Field Hockey second team all-region, first team all-conference, first team all-county, and first team All-North Jersey
  • 2012-2016 U12 and U14 elite team member at Total Dutch Field Hockey and 2016-19 U16 and U19 elite team member at Princeton Field Hockey Club under coach Carla Tagliente
  • Four-time National Futures Championship (2016-19)
  • Member of the Honor Roll, earning above a 3.5 GPA every year
  • Both of her older sisters also play collegiate field hockey. Maddie plays at Montclair State University and Nikki is a member of the University of Iowa team.

 
Sophia Mackrella | 5-6 | MF/D
Oley Valley, Penn. (Oley Valley)

  • Four-time USAFH National Futures Champion
  • Member of the NFC Stars & Stripes U16 and U19 Elite Teams
  • AAU Junior Olympics selection, USAFH Junior National Camp Selection, and 2019 USAFH O-16 Rise Team member
  • Played under Iowa All-American Tiffany Cappellano at Oley Valley and named captain of high school team, all-state honoree, and all-Division III honoree
  • Selected member of the PSFHCA All-Academic team and National All-Academic team
  • Member of the District 3 Championship team, BCIAA Championship team, Berks Division III Championship team, and state semi-finalist
  • Coached by Brian Hope and Alli Lokey as a member of the X-Calibur Field Hockey Club
  • The Scorpions won the National Indoor Tournament, Junior Premier Outdoor League Championship, Junior Premier Indoor League Championship, National Hockey Festival, and Shooting Stars, as well as runners up at the National Club Championship
  • Member of the Nation Honors Society

 
Mary Jane McNary | 5-2 | D
Glenview, Ill. (Glenbrook South)

  • Named first-team all-state in 2018 and second-team all-state in 2017
  • Voted team MVP in 2017 and 2018
  • Played nine years under coach Katie Beach for the Windy City Field Hockey Club
  • Senior class Vice President and three-time class representative
  • Member of the 2019 National Honors Society

 
Kelly Rose | 5-3 | MF
Ashburn, Va. (Broad Run)

  • Four-time Varsity starter and two-time team captain
  • Earned all-conference and all-region Player of the Year honors in 2017
  • Three-time first team all-conference and two-time first team all-region and all-county selection
  • Earned second team all-state honors in 2017 and all-metropolitan honorable mention in 2017 and second team in 2018
  • Four-time NFC Selection under coach Ralph Goodwin as a member of Metro Field Hockey Club and is a two-time Junior Olympian

 
Alex Wesneski | 5-7 | F
Forty-Fort, Pa. (Wyoming Seminary)

  • Four-time All-State and 2017 MAX Field Hockey second team All-Region honoree
  • Led team to win the 2018 State Championship
  • Member of the 2019 U17 United States National Team
  • 2018 National Academic Squad honoree
  • Played on Electric Surge club team under coach Lunda Kominsky
  • Plays basketball and is captain and named team Most Valuable Player
  • Dean’s List honoree

 
Amelia Williams | 5-4 | GK
Houston, Texas (St. John’s)

  • Played five years under coach Tina Edmonds on Texas Pride field hockey club team
  • Played in the 2017 and ­­­­2019 U19 National Futures Championship
  • Three-time National Indoor Tournament qualifier
  • Two-time regional club champion (2016 and 2017) and regional indoor qualifier (2017 and 2018)
  • Named to Max Field Hockey’s 2020 Watch List and 2018 Top-100 Players
  • Runs as a part of St. John’s Track and Field team
  • Honor Roll honoree
