IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head women’s tennis coach Sasha Schmid announced Friday that Samantha Gillas will join the University of Iowa women’s tennis team in January.

“I am looking forward to Sammi joining our program,” Schmid said. “Sammi is a high-level tennis player who has experienced success at the elite junior tennis level and at the collegiate level in the very competitive ACC tennis conference.”

Gillas is from New Braunfels, Texas, and comes to Iowa after competing at Virginia Tech as a freshman. In singles she was 28-12 in the fall and the spring. She added seven doubles wins for the Hokies in the spring. She was an ITA Academic scholar and All-Academic ACC her freshman year, while also serving on the student-athlete advisory committee. She graduated from the New Braunfels High School in 2018 and won both an individual and team Texas state championship.

“Sammi is an all-court player who will be valuable to our team in both singles and doubles. She is a tough competitor who brings her best to every match. I look forward to having Sammi immersed in our Hawkeye tennis culture and watching her grow as a tennis player, student, and, most importantly, as a person throughout her career her at Iowa.”
