IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa men’s golf senior Alex Schaake and sophomore Gonzalo Leal Montero were selected to the Division I PING All-Midwest Region Team. The announcement was made by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
This marks the 12th straight season that a Hawkeye was named to the All-Midwest Region Team and the 10th time in 12 years Iowa has had multiple student-athletes earn all-region honors.
Schaake joins Raymond Knoll and Steven Ihm as the only Hawkeyes to earn the recognition three times since 2009. It is Leal Montero’s first career postseason honor.
Schaake, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, led Iowa with four top-20 finishes, including a seventh-place finish at the Colleton River Collegiate (Mar. 2-3) with a 54-hole total of 213 (-3). He posted a 212 (-1) at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic (Oct. 7-8) for the 11th best 54-hole score in program history. Schaake carded a 69 three times this season, led Iowa with a 71.6 scoring average, and recorded 11 rounds at or below par this season.
Leal Montero was second on the team in scoring average (71.9), while registering 10 rounds at or below par. The Seville, Spain, native posted a career-best 18-hole score of 66 (-5) at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic. Leal Montero recorded a career-best 54-hole score of 208 (-5) at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate (Oct. 21-22) to tie for eighth place. His 54-hole total of 208 was the eighth-best in program history.
