Former Hawkeye Anna Herdlein Passes Away

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Iowa rowing letterman Anna Herdlein has passed away at the age of 30.

Herdlein was on the rowing team from 2009-2013, competing in the mostly in the 2V4+. She helped the Hawkeyes to a sixth-place team finishes at the Big Ten Championships as a junior and senior.

She worked in mental health treatment homes and AmeriCorps in Massachusetts, where she led trainings in mental health first aid. She also wrote grants for an advocacy/organizing union for marginalized people. She volunteered with needle exchanges, food banks, and animal shelters. Her favorite was the Brown Dog Coalition, a Massachusetts animal rescue organization, where she fostered dogs in need of adoption.

Predeceased by her father, Robert Herdlein, her uncle Bruce Therrien, and both sets of grandparents. She is survived by her partner, Russell Pandres, her mother, Sharon Herdlein, and her brother, Matthew Herdlein (fiancé Katie Williamson). She will be acutely missed by many friends and family including Cindy Teeple/Michael Rotindo, Barbara Jago, Lauren Rockwood, Sally Risk, Kxaty Krol, cousin Tom Kelly (wife Carol and daughter Laura), Sarah Gerston, Scott Stirling, Connie Pelletier, Uncle Paul (Sue) Therrien, Liz Kulig, the Goode family, the Jobin family, the Fairweather family, and Connie Montgomery.
