IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior Gonzalo Leal Montero was the medalist at the Copa Andalucia Masculina, a 72-hole tournament held in Malaga, Spain.
Leal Montero was dialed in at the par-72 Atalaya Golf & Country Club. He carded a four-under par 68 in each round, for a final score of 16-under par 272. The Spain native, who sank 20 birdies and two eagles during the tournament, finished six strokes better than runner-up Quim Vidal Mora.
The Copa Andalucia Masculina, which is a World Amateur Golf Rankings event, is the start of the amateur golf season in Spain and features the top players from Spain and Europe.
Leal Montero and the Iowa Hawkeyes open their 2021 spring schedule, Jan. 25-26, at the Timuquana Collegiate in Jacksonville, Florida.
