Hawkeyes Surging At Kiawah Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C.  The University of Iowa men’s golf team currently sits in ninth place after the first day of play at the inaugural Kiawah Invitational.

Teams were scheduled to play 36 holes today at Oak Point Golf Club, but several teams did not complete the second round when play was suspended due to darkness. Prior to the suspension of play, Iowa’s 9-under par second round is the sixth lowest score among the 14-team field.

Junior Gonzalo Leal Montero and sophomore Mac McClear are leading the way for the Hawkeyes, each at 3-under par. Leal Montero has one hole remaining in his second round, which has included four birdies and an eagle. McClear sank five birdies in his second round, which has two holes remaining.

Fifth-year senior Alex Schaake is close behind at 2-under par. Schaake has a bogey-free second round going, draining three birdies. He has two holes remaining in his second round.

Senior Charles Jahn is tied for 43rd, carding a 1-under par in the first round and sitting at 1-over par with a handful of holes remaining in his second round. Fifth-year senior Benton Weinberg fired a 2-under par 70 in his second round and is tied for 49th, while senior Jake Rowe is tied for 80th.

Players with holes remaining will start tomorrow at 7 a.m. (CT) with the final round starting immediately following the conclusion of the second round.
