Hawkeyes Start Strong At Spartan Collegiate

SEA ISLAND, Ga. — The University of Iowa men’s golf team surged out to a strong start at the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island on Monday. The Hawkeyes are 2-under par after two rounds and are tied for fourth place in the 16-team tournament heading into Tuesday’s final day of competition at the par-72 Plantation Golf Course.

The Hawkeyes have three golfers positioned in the top 15 of the leaderboard: Benton Weinberg (T-2), Mac McClear (T-5), and Alex Schaake (T-15). Weinberg recorded Iowa’s best score after 36 holes (-4), carding a 2-under par 70 in rounds one and two. The fifth-year senior is tied for second place, just one shot behind Notre Dame’s Andrew Leary (-5), heading into Tuesday’s final round. McClear had Iowa’s next-best score on Monday, finishing at 3-under, bolstered by a personal-best 6-under par 66 in the first round. Schaake drained four birdies in the second round and is 1-under par after 36 holes.

The Hawkeyes are tied with Northwestern in fourth place, ahead of four other Big Ten Teams (Ohio State, Indiana, Rutgers, and Minnesota). Tournament host Michigan State is tied with No. 39 Notre Dame for first place, just four shots in front of the Hawkeyes.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH TYLER STITH
“Mac McClear’s round of 66 this morning was impressive. He continues to get more confident in his game. When he gets the putter going he is capable of shooting low scores. Benton played solid all day. He showed a lot of patience making 16 straight pars this afternoon before birdieing his last two holes for a bogey-free 70.”
