Hawkeyes Win 5 Matches In Final Day Of Watanabe Classic

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The University of Iowa women’s tennis student-athletes finished strong on Sunday in the final day of the Watanabe Classic. The Hawkeyes posted three singles wins and two doubles victories to conclude their fall season.

Barbora Parkorna cruised over Dixie State’s Ya-Chi (6-0, 6-1) in Flight 1 to place seventh. In Flight 2, Michelle Bacalla bounced Grand Canyon’s Fabienne Schmidt (6-2, 6-1) to capture third place.

Samantha Gillas defeated Dixie State’s Rachel Mellor (6-2, 6-2) to finish fifth in Flight 3. Vipasha Mehra fell to UNLV’s Cindy Hu (6-3, 6-3) in the Flight 4 championship. Mehra was moved to compete Hu due to two UNLV teammates in the final.

Both doubles teams notched wins today. Gillas/Mehra beat Dixie State’s Mellor Hildreth (6-1) in Flight 1. Pokorna/Bacalla downed Long Beach State’s Le Du/Siornei (6-2).

The Hawkeyes open their spring season on Jan. 16 where they will face Marquette in their home opener in Iowa City.
