Hailey Mercuri Invited to Canadian National Camp

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Sophomore Hailey Mercuri has been invited to the Canadian U23 Selection Camp in North Cowichan, Canada.

The Ontario native was selected for the opportunity after a very successful season with the Hawkeyes. Mercuri was a member of two victorious Varsity Eight boats, one of which was honored as the Big Ten Boat of the Week award on March 30.

“I am absolutely thrilled for Hailey to be invited,” tells Head Coach Jeff Garbutt, “She’s worked so hard to get to this point in her rowing career. Her grit and determination have served her well and I look forward to seeing what she will do this summer. It’s just another example of how amazing this group of young women are that we get to work with each day.”

The process of selection for the Canadian U23 Selection Camp includes two forms of analysis. Women aiming to be selected can either perform at on-water try-out session in the spring, or to submit a 2K. Mercuri, who was fully fledged into Iowa’s record-breaking season, chose the latter.

“I couldn’t have done it without the amazing staff support at Iowa, from back in November with the Canadian National Rowing Championships trials, all the way to the training until my 2K submission,” Mercuri says, “I am excited to see what I can do at camp.”

Mercuri will head to North Cowichan in June, where she will compete for a spot on the U23 Canadian National Team. If selected, Mercuri will travel to Varese, Italy for the U23 World Rowing Championships.
