No. 4 Maryland Edges No. 3 Hawkeyes in OT

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Maryland’s Dani Van Rootselarr’s golden goal in the 64th minute sent the fourth-ranked Terrapins to a 2-1 victory over the third-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team on Friday afternoon at Grant Field.

The loss drops the Hawkeyes’ record to 8-2 overall, 2-1 in Big Ten play. It was Iowa’s first loss at home this season.

Junior Alex Wesneski put Iowa on top in the 43rd minute when she intercepted a pass in front of the Terp goal and put the shot away for her team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Maryland tied the game in the final minute of the third quarter, taking advantage of a flurry of penalty corners. Van Rootselaar tied the game at the 44:20 mark before scoring the game-winning goal following another penalty corner three minutes into the second half.

QUOTING COACH CELLUCCI
“We did not play a great game of hockey today and that hurts because we were in this (game) not playing close to our best 60 minutes. We diverted from the plan; we have to stick to the plan. We didn’t get many shots today and that was frustrating. We have to put their goalkeeper under pressure. We didn’t create enough opportunities; too many balls over the end line and missed receptions. We’re better than what we showed today.

“Progress is going to have ebbs and flows. We have to regroup and play a good Rutgers team on Sunday. We have to take care of the details. It’s about details and discipline for us.”
