Hawkeye Duo Places 2nd at Intercollegiate Championships

SAN DIEGO, California – University of Iowa women’s tennis student-athletes competing in this weekend’s Intercollegiate Championships wrapped up their final day of action at the Hogan Tennis Center on Sunday. The Hawkeyes posted another singles win.

Daianne Hayashida and Vipasha Mehra paired up one more time for the last doubles match of the tournament in the finals. The two took home runner-up honors after falling to Skrobonja/Detkovskaya of San Diego State, 6-0.

“This was a great tournament for us,” said head coach Sasha Schmid. “We got a lot of competitive matches in and we are getting the experience we need in pressure situations to be able to grow. I am really proud of the girls. Our doubles really stepped forward and I can see the team improving in many ways. We are looking forward to building on this in practice and heading to regionals.”

In the extra singles matches of the day, Samantha Mannix recorded a victory against Maddison Tattini of Utah in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Marisa Schmidt fell to Utah’s Katya Townsend, 7-5, 6-4.

The Hawkeyes will travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma, in two weeks to compete in the ITA Central Regionals, beginning on October 13.
