Taylor, Wesneski Named September's Student-Athletes of the Month

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa student-athletes Tory Taylor (football) and Alex Wesneski (field hockey) were named September’s Student-Athletes of the Month. The University of Iowa Student-Athlete Advisory Committee announced on Friday.

Taylor, a junior punter from Melbourne, Australia, was named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts against South Dakota State and Rutgers. Taylor ranks second in the Big Ten and sixth nationally in punting average (46.1 yards per punt). Additionally, Taylor has 15 punts of 50 yards or more and 20 punts that were downed inside the 20-yard line.

Taylor averaged 51 yards per punt against Iowa State. In Iowa’s win at Rutgers, 80 percent of Taylor’s punts were downed inside the 20, while he pinned South Dakota State inside the 20-yard line on 70 percent of his punts.

Wesneski, a junior forward from Forty-Fort, Pennsylvania, earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 25. She helped lead Iowa to a 7-1 record during the month of September with three wins over ranked opponents. Wesneski scored nine goals throughout the month, including two game-winners.

Wesneski had three multi-goal performances during the month, including scoring both goals in Iowa’s 2-0 road win at #1 Northwestern.
